Breeder walkthrough
Pairings, clutches, hatchlings, lineage — end to end.
Breeder walkthrough
You're running a breeding operation. ScaleVault tracks the full pipeline from selection → pairing → clutch → hatchling → buyer, and everything links back so you can pull up parentage, COI, and survival rates from any animal.
Up-front setup
- Species — make sure each species you breed has accurate incubation temp + humidity ranges. The standard library populates these but always verify against your own references — see Standard species library.
- Enclosures — set up a rack scheme that mirrors how you actually work. Many breeders use one enclosure per shelf; some use one per animal. Either works, but per-animal makes scanning easier.
- Animals — for each breeder, fill in sex, weight, length, hatch date, and any morph genetics. Sire and dam fields can be filled in later for animals you produced or imported with known parentage.
- Foods — each species has a food list. Quick feed defaults to the first food item on the list.
Breeding season workflow
selection → pairing → clutch → bulk offspring → hatchlings live as animals
1. Plan the pairings
Go to /pairings → + New pairing. Pick a sire and
dam (the form rejects same-sex pairs). Name the pairing how you'd
remember it ("Coral Glow 2026 → Pinstripe het Pied").
2. Log mating activity
Open the pairing and add observations as Events under the pairing notes. (Lockings, copulations, etc.)
3. Record the clutch
When eggs are laid (or the female gives birth), go to the pairing detail and click + Clutch. Fill in:
- Lay date (or birth date for live-bearers)
- Live birth? checkbox
- Clutch size — the number of eggs/babies
- Survival count — leave blank until they hatch
- Incubation temp / humidity — overrides the species defaults
- Egg issues notes — slugs, deformities, etc.
4. Bulk-add hatchlings
Once the clutch hatches, open it and click + Bulk offspring. This creates one animal record per hatchling, all linked to the same clutch and parents. You can edit individual records afterward.
5. Track sales
Mark animals as sold under Account → Custody events or with a custom event type. Use the public profile pages to share photos with buyers — see Public profiles.
What you get for free
- COI (coefficient of inbreeding) is calculated automatically whenever sire and dam are both known and have ancestry data. Visible on the animal detail page.
- Lineage trees — name a founder and ScaleVault renders the family tree downstream. See Lineages.
- Pairing analytics — clutch size and survival aggregated per pairing on the pairings table.
